‘Water is life’. This statement itself brings forth the importance of water not only for human beings but for the entire ecosystem to survive. No life would exist if there was no water. This transparent liquid covers 71% of the total land on Earth. Out of this 71%, we have 97% of water in the form of oceans and only the remaining 3% is available for our use. Our survival is entirely dependent on water. There is no alternative to it and hence, it is very important to save water not only for the present generation but also for our future. We find water in lakes, rivers, Wells, ponds, oceans and at many other places. 71% of our land is covered with water out of which only 3% is suitable for the human use. Since we cannot imagine life without water, it is important to know that water takes millions of years to form, so using it unconsciously will result in a situation where we will be left with no water. With only 3% of water in usable form, sustaining ever increasing population is quite a tough job. We need to be very careful about it’s usage and every individual should try to save as much water as he can. Being careless about it will result in finishing water and therefore, finishing life.
We see a no. Of examples of careless usage of water like a kid who washes his hands and forgets to close the tap, when a family is careless about getting a leaking tap repaired etc. These are some examples that show sheer wastage of water.
It is very important for us to know how important each drop of water is. Rajasthan, a state in India undergoes droughts and face scarcity of water to a great extent. People have to walk miles so as to get some water to drink. So, every drop that anyone saves can serve as a savior of some other human.
Uses of water
- Water plays a very important role in agriculture. Crops require water for the purpose of irrigation. Shortage of water in the field can lead to the death of crops and as a result, scarcity of food. Hence, regular water supply is very essential for the crops to survive.
- The survival of ecosystem lies in the regular supply of water. It’s is the water vapour that is present in the atmosphere which absorbs the heat from the Sun and through the water cycle that exists in nature, all the water sources remain filled with water.
- Water finds an important role in the industries as well. Industries like the steel industry, mining, food, petrochemical, paper, chemical, fertilizer industry etc., use water for the purpose of cooling, generating power, protection from fire, cleaning, and for air cooling.
- The thermal power plant uses water for the production of thermal power.
- Not just for survival, water can also be used for recreational activities like swimming, boating, rafting, fishing etc.
- Our households too are dependent on water for a no. of activities like , cooking, cleaning, washing, drinking, bathing, etc.
How to save water ?
As we know that water serves a huge no. of purposes, it is very important for us to save water so that it never comes to an end and formation of water takes millions of years. Here are some ways that you can use in order to save water.
- It is the responsibility of each one of us as an individual to save water. We can save it by using it carefully and not in a careless manner. This can be done by using bucket for washing cars instead of using pipes, closing the tap while brushing, preventing the use of shower for bathing etc. These are some through which we can contribute in saving the water.
- Using rainwater for the purpose of watering plants, cleaning, toilet flushing etc., can help us in saving water.
- Rainwater harvesting is a great idea for saving rainwater for it’s future use.
- One should always water plants either during the day or in the evening. Watering plants between 12 noon to 4 pm leads to sheer wastage of water as the Sun is on top and the water evaporates very quickly.
- We should get the leaking taps repaired to prevent any wastage of water.
- We should plant more and more trees as they freshen the air and also promotes the incoming of rain.
- Use water in the cooler only when required and not unnecessarily.
- Just knowing these points to save water isn’t enough. We should try to implement them in real so that we can actually save water. Organizing ‘save water’ campaigns to make people aware of the importance of water will help a lot in awakening them to save water.

Water is one of those natural resources without which life is impossible. Nature has enough of this resource to fulfill are need but if we will not use it carefully, that day is not very far when we will crave for water. It will get exhausted for the present generation as well as the future generation. It is high time now.
