The current Education Minister of Tamil Nadu is Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi. He is a member of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party and has been in office since 2021. He is the grandson of former DMK Minister Anbil P. Dharmalingam and the son of former DMK MLA Anbil Poyyamozhi. Mahesh Poyyamozhi was born on December 2, 1977, in Trichy, Tamil Nadu. He studied at Bishop Heber College in Tiruchirappalli and graduated with a Master of Computer Application (MCA) degree in 2001. He then worked as a software engineer for several years before joining politics. Mahesh Poyyamozhi was elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly in 2016 from the Thiruverumbur constituency. He was re-elected in 2021. In 2021, he was appointed as the Minister for School Education by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. Mahesh Poyyamozhi is married and has two children.

The education system is based on the national level pattern with 12 years of schooling together with eight years of elementary education as –
- Five years of primary education
- Three years of education for the age groups of 6-11 and 11-14 years of age i.e. elementary education.
