The Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme (PMSS) was initiated in the year 2006-07. The National Defense fund administered by the Welfare and Rehabilitation Board, Ministry of Home Affairs, and Government of India sponsor this scholarship scheme. It was implemented to provide support and encourage the widows and wards of the ex-service/deceased personnel of Railway Protection Forces, Central Armed Police Forces & Assam Rifles (CAPFs & AR), Para Military Forces, and State Police Personnel in their technical and post-graduation education. Pradhan Mantri scholarship scheme starts in the month of October every year for the candidates who need financial help in their education.

PM Scholarship
The Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme (PMSS) is now only in online mode and have been active from Academic Year 2016-17. It is available for education at various institutions such as – dental, medical, engineering, MCA, veterinary, MBA, and other technical and scientific-based institutions having AICTE/UGC approval.
♦ PM Scholarship Rewards:
This scheme awards five thousand five hundred scholarships every year. A total of 2,000 eligible students get awarded every year under this scholarship scheme – the number of boys receiving this scholarship is equal to the number of girls receiving this scholarship. The amount being awarded is Rs.2,250/- for girls and Rs.2,000/- for boys per month and is paid per year. It has now increased to Rs.3,000/- for girls and Rs.2,500/- for boys per month w.e.f FY 2019-20. The selected students will receive the payment in their bank account through ECS.
The scholarship duration may vary depending on the student’s course duration from one year to five years. Furthermore, 500 more scholarships – 250 for girls and 250 for boys – will be awarded to the wards of martyred State Police Personnel during Terror/Naxal attacks from 2019-2020 onwards.
♦ PM Scholarship Eligibility
The Prime Minister Scholarship Scheme is only offered to a selected group of students who fulfill the basic eligibility criteria set by the government. In order to be eligible for the Scholarship Scheme, the candidates should have completed their 10+2 as the minimum qualification. We have mentioned additional eligibility criteria below which you can refer to.
- Candidate must be dependent widow/ward of retired and serving CAPFs & AR State Police Personnel or deceased CAPFs & AR/ Ex-CAPFs & AR.
- Candidate must be pursuing professional and technical courses at various institutions such as – dental, medical, engineering, MCA, veterinary, MBA, and other technical and scientific-based institutions having AICTE/UGC approval.
- Candidates pursuing lateral entry and integrated courses are not eligible for this scholarship.
- Candidate must have minimum education qualification is class 12/ Diploma/ graduation to apply for these courses and to be eligible for the scholarship.
- Candidates should have scored a minimum of 60% marks or more in the minimum educational qualification.
- Candidates who want to renew the scholarship in subsequent years are required to obtain a minimum of 50% marks in the qualifying exam.
- Candidates who are ward /widow of State Police officials that were martyred during Terror/Naxal attacks will be awarded a scholarship sponsored by the Government of India.
- Candidates applying on an online platform for scholarship applications are eligible for the Prime Minister scholarship only through the official website of the Kendriya Sainik Board.
- Candidates pursuing diploma courses are not eligible, the scholarship includes professional degree courses that are recognized by the central administrative body only such as UGC, MCI, AICTE, etc.
- Candidates who want to use this scholarship to study abroad are not eligible.
- Candidates pursuing PG courses are not eligible. Only candidates pursuing Management (MBA) and MCA courses are eligible for Prime Minister Scholarship Scheme.
- Candidates who are wards or civilians of Para-military central armed force police or personnel are not eligible for this scholarship. This is applicable only for the candidates who are widows or wards of Ex-servicemen who have contributed by serving the Air Force, Navy, Army, and Coastguards.
Exclusions:
Given below is the list of those category of candidates who will not be eligible for the PM Scholarship Scheme:
- Candidates who had already availed for the scholarship
- Candidates who are studying abroad
- Candidates receive stipend for their course
- Children of civilian employees of CAPFs, Assam Rifles and SPP
- Candidates who are applying for other scholarships
- Candidates who are pursuing any diploma course or master degree course except MBA and MCA

PM Scholarship 2024 Registration Process
Students who wish to opt for the PM Scholarship 2024 are required to complete the registration by visiting the official website of the authority before the last date. There are certain documents which you are required to submit while submitting the online registration form. We have mentioned below the steps which you are required to follow to submit the online registration form.
- Visit the official website of NSP: https://scholarships.gov.in/
- Click on, “New Registration”.
- Read and go through the application guidelines and conditions carefully.
- Continue to proceed.
- Fill in the necessary details in the application form.
- Recheck all the details to see if it is filled correctly as failure to do so might result in rejection of your application.
- Click on “Register”.
- Remember the application ID and the password entered while registering as it will be useful in further processes.
2) Complete the application process
- Log in to the portal using application id and password received on the candidate’s registered mobile number.
- An OTP will be generated on your registered mobile number for permission of successful login.
- Verify the OTP and make sure to change the password.
- Once the candidate is logged in, fill in the scholarship application form.
- Upload a scanned copy of each necessary documents.
- Candidate must read through and double-check the application form and attached documents before uploading.
- Click on, “Submit”.
PM Scholarship 2024 Documents Requirement
The application form requires candidates to attach required documents to apply for the Prime Minister Scholarship Scheme. Since the submission of the applications is on an online platform, candidates are required to prepare scanned copies of each necessary documentation prior to starting the application. Given below are the list of required documents that must be attached to the application form for the PM Scholarship Scheme:
- Certificate issued by the concerned state government specifying that the State Police personnel was killed in Terror or Naxal attacks.
- Death Certificate. It is applicable for deceased personnel.
- Serving Certificate in the case of serving personnel that is issued by HOO.
- Academic certificate or certificate of Minimum Educational Qualification (MEQ) along with Class 12th mark sheet, Diploma mark sheets of all semesters, or Graduation mark sheet of all years.
- PPO/Discharge Certificate/Book. It is mandatory for Category A to F.
- Certificate of Gallantry Award. It is applicable only for Gallantry Award winners.
- Disability Certificate. It is applicable to disabled personnel only.
- Bank account details of the candidate.
♦ Selection Criteria
With the overflowing applicants, there is the possibility of shortlisting the student for the Prime Minister Scholarship Scheme. The Ministry of Home Affairs takes care of the end-to-end disbursement and implementation of the scheme and there are various ways in which the selection preference is given to students. The details for the students eligible for final selection is in the following order:
- Category A:
In this category, the 1st preference is given to the widows and wards of CAPFs & AR personnel who were deceased or martyred in action. - Category B:
In this category, the 2nd preference is given to the wards of Ex-CAPFs & AR personnel who got injured and disabled in action. - Category C:
In this category, the 3rd preference is given to the widows and wards of deceased CAPFs & AR personnel who died during their service for causes owed in the field of Government service. - Category D:
In this category, the preference is given to the wards of Ex-CAPFs & AR personnel who got injured and disabled during their service with disability owed in the field of Government service. - Category E:
In this category, the preference is given to the wards of Ex-CAPFs & AR personnel who have secured the gallantry awards. - Category F:
In this category, the preference is given to the wards of Ex-CAPFs & AR personnel who have PBOR only. - Category G:
In this last category, the preference is given to the wards of serving CAPFs & AR personnel (PBOR) subject to the availability of the scholarship. - Note:
Candidate who is ward/widow of State Police officials that were martyred during Terror/Naxal attacks will be also be given preference and be awarded a scholarship sponsored by the Government of India.
♦ Renewal of PM Scholarship:
Candidates that want to apply for renewal of scholarship are required to apply online in the portal for renewal of the scholarship. The selected scholars after receiving their first installment of Prime Minister scholarship soon after the merit list is put out can only be awarded subsequent payments if the candidate applies for renewal after completing each academic year. One of the best perks about the renewal of the scholarship is that candidates can apply for it within one year of the announcement of examination results and the applications can also be prepared throughout the year but excluding the months between January and April.
Given below are two mandatory conditions that must be followed in order to be eligible for renewal of the Prime Minister Scholarship Scheme for candidates:
- Candidate must obtain a minimum of 50% marks in each academic year or semester.
- Candidate must pass all subjects in each academic year or semester in the first attempt.
- The candidate can maintain a very good academic record to get the benefits of various scholarship schemes from the government.

PM Scholarship 2024 Status
First please visit the official website then the home page will be opened. On it you will see the option of Status Application. You have to click on this option. After clicking on the option, the next page will be open on the computer screen. On this page, you have to enter the application ID and verification code. Then your application status will appear.
By viewing the application status, you can keep a track of your scholarship. Sometimes, it may happen that due to an incomplete form, or mistakes in the form, the application status is shown as rejected. If you keep a check on the status often, you can then acknowledge and edit the form or take the necessary action.
PM Scholarship Guidelines:
- PM Scholarship is implemented only on those courses whose duration is maximum five years
- This scholarship is applicable only for the first professional degree courses
- Aadhar card of the candidate must be linked to their bank account
- Candidates will be blacklisted if they are found guilty of providing any wrong information. He/she will be blacklisted for upto five years. Utmost care must be taken that the information provided is correct and real.
- The amount of the scholarship will be transferred to the candidate’s personal account through PFMS under DBT.
- The candidate must provide the correct bank details while filling out the PM scholarship. You can also keep checking the website for more updates.
- As you know, the application should include bank account details and a copy of the cancelled cheque. It is advised to the students that the bank account is opened in either the State Bank of India or Punjab National Bank so that the PM scholarship 2024 amount is sent through ECS.
