EVS: Environmental studies, this is a subject taught generally during primary classes, so that students know have basic knowledge about environment and feels connected to the environment. It is generally said that a child adapts to whatever he is taught in his early years, so it is necessary to teach children about how the environment works and how they can contribute to the environment in a positive way.
This article is for teacher, parents or guardian of children who are in class 1st or are going to come in class 1st in a year or so or for anyone who’s child has started going to school. As we all know that our environment is getting affected adversely due to all the things going on around us, such as global warming, pollution, polythene bags, etc. We all know that it’s harmful for the environment and for us as well. We have to live in this surrounding, so it’s our duty to make this surrounding beautiful and peaceful. Child tries to adapt habits that they see their elders doing, it’s very important for us to teach children how to respect the nature and be grateful towards nature for providing us all the things we have today.
Seeing the importance of the environment, NCERT has a special subject dedicated just to the environment. The name of subject is EVS or Environmental Studies. It is a subject where children get to understand about real situation in their environment. Also they would learn that how they should react to the environmental issues, that could be natural, physical, social or cultural. By studying this subject children would also get an idea about ways to help the environment as much as they can.
Here, the main tip is for teachers that they should focus more on giving practical examples or exposure to the children, so that they can get to know better about what they are studying. Practical example teaches them how to behave if the same things happen around them too.

- Unit 1- I and my body
This unit gives a basic introduction about humans and body parts of humans.
- Unit 2- Our needs
This unit tells child about what are the basic requirements that a person needs to live. Basic needs of a person are food, water, air and shelter.
- Unit 3- My family and our celebrations
This unit tells child about the family and the relations we have in a family. About all the festivals we celebrate throughout the year irrespective of the religion of the festival. Also how you celebrate these festivals.
- Unit 4- Means of transport and road safety
This unit tells children about all the modes of transport available to you for commuting from one place to other. Also guides children about all the safety measures they should follow on road.
- Unit 5- Plants and animals around us
This unit tells children about all the different species of plants and animals present around us. So that children learn how to love plants and animals.
- Unit 6- My neighborhood
This unit teaches children about all the types of people generally present in our neighborhood and how they should behave with them. Also this unit teaches them about all the important places around them.
- Unit 7- The earth and the sky
This unit gives basic knowledge about the sun, moon, stars and earth to the children. Also they get to learn about different types of seasons and around which time of the year they occur.
- Unit 8- Good habits
As we know children inculcate the habits taught to them in the early years of their life. So this unit teaches children about the good habits that they should follow to become a nice human. Also this unit teaches children about the safety habits that they should follow.
