The University is established on the name of a former Indian Politician Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. The university is dealing in the education field since 1926.
It was set up as a Government college. Henceforth the Jharkhand State Universities Amendment Act passed, the college has converted into the university in 2026.
It is situated in Ranchi, capital of Jharkhand.
