Environmental studies, this is a subject included in curriculum of CBSE from class 1st to class 12th. In primary classes EVS is a separate subject, where in secondary and senior secondary classes this subject is included in other subjects such as science or social studies. This article is basically for parents, teachers or guardians of students who are in class 2nd. As, this article describes about the syllabus covered in NCERT book of class 2nd.
Environment is the most important thing we need to pay attention towards, if we want our future generation to enjoy the same environment we did all of these years. It’s high time that we teach the coming generation also to respect the environment and take care of the nature around them. We need to tell them not to disturb the harmony of nature and make peace with the nature and live peacefully and cherish the environment around them. Children grasp things faster in their childhood, if they are taught nicely with right example, they would keep the lesson with them throughout their life. We are surrounded with so much diversity of plants and animals, it’s our duty to make children love the plants and animals around them and not hurt them. These are small things we seriously need to inculcate in the children.
As a initiative to teach students about the environment around us, CBSE has kept EVS as a subject in the syllabus of the students from class 1st to class 12th, either directly or indirectly. NCERT has books of every subject for every class. Here, this article is to give you a brief overview about the syllabus of EVS of class 2nd. NCERT has kept the level of difficulty according to the understanding of the students, so that they don’t have to face hardship in studying the subject. Also, it’s important that the students understand the message that is being conveyed by the lesson they are taught. Teachers are advised to focus more on practical examples, so that it gives a clear picture to students making it easy for them to understand what they are being taught.
EVS is a very diverse subject, this subjects includes some topics of science as well as social science. It gives children a diverse knowledge about all the things taking place around them in the environment they live. It is important to study EVS nicely in early classes as it prepares a basic behavioral pattern in students mind, that they should behave in a particular manner when they come across any situation similar to what they have studied.
In class 2nd EVS majorly focuses on teaching students about nature, humans, social and cultural activities taking place around them or around the globe.

- Chapter 1- Invention of wheels
This chapter tells students about how the wheels were invented, what was the need to invent wheels, how life was before wheels, how life has became simplified because of wheels and everything that they need to know about the wheels and it’s invention.
- Chapter 2- Good habits
This chapter teaches students that what are the good habits that they should follow are in their daily life, why they need to follow good habits. This chapter is important to teach good habits to students in an early age to help them become a good human.
- Chapter 3- Means of communication
This chapter tells students about the various modes of communication in detail, pros and cons of every mode of communication. This increases the knowledge of students regarding the things happening around them.
- Chapter 4- Clothes
This chapter tells students about the various kinds of clothes available in the market around them. Also this chapter tells about utility of the different types of clothes according to seasons, cultures and various other factors.
- Chapter 5- World around me
This chapter tells students about the world around them and introduces them to various new things that they need to know.
- Chapter 6- Get to know me
This chapter tells students facts about normal humans as general and also introduces them to the hidden things that they don’t know about themselves, like their hobbies, favorite sports, etc.

This chapter teaches students about the directions, understand how directions work.
- Chapter 8- Houses
This chapter tells students about various types of houses, which type of houses are found in which areas, why it is necessary to build houses according to the climate, types of houses built in various types of climates, etc.

This chapter tells students about the various kinds of services available in the neighborhood such as hospitals, grocery shops, etc. and their utility in their life.
- Chapter 10- Time
This chapter tells students about how time works, why it is important to follow time and be punctual.
- Chapter 11- Air, water, food and shelter
This chapter tells students about the basic necessities which they need to live, i.e. air, food, water and shelter. This chapter describes why these things are necessary for us to live a peaceful life.
- Chapter 12- Means of transport
This chapter teaches students about the various means of transport available to them, uses of different means of transport according to the situations, pros and cons of every means of transport.
- Chapter 13- Our family
This chapter introduces children to various relations in their family, how they are related to someone in their family, and what that relation is called. Also this chapter teaches students how to introduce their family.
