Devotee members of Sri Aurobindo and the Divine Mother started this school in the year 1983 at BK Block, Sector II of Salt Lake City, Kolkata. Later the school was expanded at CL Block on two bighas of land. The new building is called Miranka (signifying the Mother’s Lap). Inspired by the ideals and teachings of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother a group of devotees of Salt Lake, Kolkata, started an Association named Sri Aurobindo Institute of Education with a view to spreading their message in all spheres of society. This Association was registered under West Bengal Societies Registration Act, 1961.
Now, the school is running in two buildings – one in BK Block and other in CL Block. It is an English medium co-educational school. Bengali and Hindi are compulsory subjects.
The school is recognized by the Education Department of Government of West Bengal and is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi.

The school conducts two unit tests and two terminal examinations for the secondary and senior secondary classes which are evenly spaced within each academic session. In addition, project work, field work and educational tours are also included in the curriculum. For the primary section students, no such tests or examinations are held. Instead, they are continuously assessed throughout the academic year.
