SOCIS- School of Computer and Information Sciences is a constituent College of the Indira Gandhi National Open University, established in 1991. The main goal is to provide students with high-quality computer science education through Open Distance Learning (ODL). The mission of establishing this school is to grant access to learners with higher education in computer science and develop their skills, and theoretical and practical knowledge to achieve their goals in various occupations related to this field.
IGNOU offers four courses that come under the School of Computer and Information Sciences (SOCIS), mentioned below:
· Certificate in Information Technology (CIT): This course is basically designed to provide the students with the knowledge of basic software, hardware, and multimedia technologies. The subjects included are the introduction of information technology, fundamentals of computer systems, multimedia applications, and web-based technology. The duration of the course is six months and there is no age restriction to get admitted.
· Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA)- This undergraduate course’s goal is to psychologically prepare the students with the fundamental and advanced knowledge of a job in the field of computers and information technology. The study lasts three years and is divided into six semesters. The entire syllabus includes topics like web design, database management, and programming languages like java, c, and c++.
· Masters of Computer Applications (MCA): The MCA course provides a theoretical foundation as well as exposure to comprehensive practical knowledge. The time span of this course is three years which is again divided into six semesters.
· Doctor of Philosophy Computer Science ( PhD. CS): the objective of this program is to bring forward research and development in the sector of computer science and related disciplines.
ADMISSION PROCEDURE
For information regarding admission, students must frequently visit the IGNOU official website, where all relevant information is updated. Before submitting the application forms, the students must also study the eligibility conditions and the fee structure. The pupils are required to fill out an application and provide scanned copies of the required paperwork for extra verification. The website includes a list of all required materials before application forms are sent, and important notices are also published there. The interested candidate must be thoroughly aware of the eligibility conditions before applying for any particular course in order to completely grasp them.
ELIGIBILITY AND FEE STRUCTURE
For Undergraduate courses like BCA, the students must have completed 10+2 with at least 50% marks. The fee is approximately Rs 30,000.
For the certificate courses CIT and CMAD, the students must have done the 10th standard of SSC. The fee is Rs 4,000 and 5,000 respectively.
For the postgraduate courses, the students must have completed the bachelor’s degree. The fee is between Rs 20,000 to 70,000 for different courses.
For the doctoral course, PHDCS, the students must have completed the master’s degree and the fee is Rs 16,800.
NOTE- The students are required to submit scanned copies of documents asked while filling out the forms which are- a transfer certificate, class 10th, and 12th mark sheets, a character certificate, a community certificate, a degree certificate, and passport size photographs of the candidates along with an identity proof such as aadhar card. All the documents must be submitted after cross checking properly as the authorities may reject the application if found any kind of discrepancy with the documents.
